When we choose to be content with the cup we have, God will make what we have an overflowing cup.
“… I have learned in whatever state I am to be content” Philippians 4:11b My family lived in a small 3 bedroom apartment for over 10 years with our 3 children and a cat. When we moved into this apartment our youngest was 4 years old and our oldest was 12. The Lord had opened this particular door for our family and I was thankful yet in my heart I believed and hoped it was temporary. Whenever I would drive somewhere I would look for “for rent” signs and think about the possibility of our family moving there. Of course it was always too expensive and we were struggling financially as it was. But this constant "looking" kept my heart in discontent with where we were, robbing me of the joy and opportunities of the present circumstance. After about two years of this I confessed to the Lord my discontent and declared my desire to walk in contentment. I didn’t want to keep looking elsewhere to be satisfied but wanted to enjoy God’s blessing in the present location. I made a decision that day that if I spent the rest of my life in that apartment I would be content. I would choose from then on to see it as an opportunity not a limitation. Our family would spend another 9 years in that apartment and I am honestly thankful we did. God had a plan and purpose for us being there. We all struggle with contentment in varying degrees. The dictionary defines discontent as a restless desire or craving for something one does not have. When we fix our eyes on what we don’t have we miss the blessings and opportunities in what we do have. Choosing to be satisfied with the portion and position God has given to us directly affects our visibility. When we are thankful in the position and circumstances God has placed us we will begin to see things we would otherwise miss. Often there are lessons to be learned, people to be ministered to and experiences to be lived. Choosing contentment in Christ transforms a seemingly deprived life to an abundant life. A cup that is perceived as half empty becomes an overflowing cup that is brimming with life and opportunities. Contentment is a choice of the will to begin to align ones self with the purposes of God and view your particular circumstance through His eyes. It proceeds from our relationship with Him. God can change our present circumstance at any time but there is a reason for every season. Choose to rest in contentment, redeeming the time, making the most of the opportunities in the present, for the glory of God, and the furtherance of His kingdom! Then watch as your cup is transformed!
